In reality though, for all of our best efforts, it isn’t up to us whether or not we are on someone’s good side – it’s up the that person. We can do our best to sweeten the deal with a smile or a pie or whatever else we can think of, but in reality, we have no control over whether or not the other person decides to accept us and our efforts to be on his or her “good side.” Interestingly enough, the same is true of God. We can’t do anything to put ourselves in a position of right standing with God.

That’s because a person must be 100% righteous to be right with God. In other words, no sinner can be on God’s good side, and the bad news is that we are all sinners. In the Bible God said, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). That means if we are going to be right with God, someone or something is going to have to be righteous in our place.

The good news is that Jesus was 100% righteous, and he invites everyone, yes everyone, to claim His righteousness and make it their own. We can be “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Being right with God is a possibility because of what Jesus did for us. He was the 100% righteous person that none of us will ever be so that he could offer us the chance to be right with God. Right standing with God comes from God, and is available to everyone.
